What is a speech & language screening?

A screening is a brief 10–15 minute check-in with a licensed speech-language pathologist. Through parent input, interaction, and simple activities, I’ll take a look at your child’s communication skills, answer your questions, and help determine whether further evaluation may be helpful.

A screening is not a full evaluation or diagnosis.

What will we look at?

Understanding Language
How your child understands words, questions, and directions.

Expressing Themselves
How your child uses gestures, sounds, words, and sentences to communicate.

Speech
How your child produces speech sounds and how easily they are understood.

Play & Social Communication
How your child plays, interacts, shares attention, and communicates with others.

Literacy & Pre-Literacy
Early reading, reading, and language skills that support learning.

When might a screening be helpful?

You don’t need to know exactly what you’re concerned about before reaching out. A screening may be helpful if your child:

  • Isn’t talking as much as you expected

  • Is difficult to understand

  • Gets frustrated trying to communicate

  • Has difficulty understanding or following directions

  • Isn’t combining words or sentences as expected

  • Has difficulty with back-and-forth interaction or play

  • Is struggling with early reading or literacy skills

  • Has received a recommendation from a teacher, pediatrician, or caregiver

  • Or you simply have a feeling that something is worth checking out

What happens after the screening?

You’ll receive a clear summary of what I noticed, an opportunity to ask questions, and practical recommendations for what to do next.

Depending on your child’s needs, next steps may include:

  • No additional follow-up at this time

  • Monitoring specific skills

  • Strategies to try at home

  • A comprehensive speech and language evaluation

  • Referral to another professional, when appropriate

There is no obligation to schedule additional services with Tully Speech & Language.
